While the price of each meal varies with your choice of dish, portion size, and packaging options; in general, the regular minimum order of $100 will include 10 to 15 prepared and frozen meals.  An order of 15 meals will take up roughly one-forth of a above the refrigerator freezer or one tall shelf in a side-by-side freezer.

No!  We treat people like we want to be treated.  In this case that means that you order when you need more meals.  For some clients, that means you’ll choose to order weekly, for others monthly.  Some of our clients order only during the winter when they don’t want to be forced out onto the ice, and others only during the summer when their young families are busy with sports and activities.  You order when you need meals!   If you’d like us to check in on a regular basis to see if you’re ready for more meals, we’re happy to do that, as well.

We offer two different portion sizes in most of our individual serving meals, to help meet each person’s specific appetite and needs.  Our full-size portion is a good, appropriate adult portion.  It is not overly large as most servings are at restaurants, where you often get way more than you need.  A full-size entree for menu items that are protein-based (meatloaf, chicken breast, pork roast, fish fillet, etc.) are about 6 ounces of meat before cooking.  For menu items that are mixed, such as casseroles or soups, a full-size portion is about 1 1/2 cups.  If you order your meals with side dishes, each individual, full-size portion comes with two side dishes of about 1/2 cup each.

Our small portion is 2/3 the size of the full.  Protein-based entrees are about 4 ounces before cooking, mixed entrees are about 1 cup in volume, and side dishes are about 1/3 cup each.

We also offer family-size pans, which feed 4-6 adults, depending on appetite. If you order a family pan with a side dish, you will receive one side that will feed 4-6 adults.  If you’d like additional side dishes, we can add them for $5 each.

When you order a meal with side dishes, it will be packaged in a tray with the entree of your choice and two different side dishes.  Most of our meals are available to order with side dishes, but they are not listed on the menu on the website.  The reason for this is because we personalize each client’s menu depending on your own needs and preferences.  When you place your first order, we will ask if you have any food allergies or medical restrictions we need to know about when cooking for you.  We will also ask if there are any vegetables or other foods you just don’t like, so we can make other choices for you that better fit your preferences.

When you order a meal with side dishes, it will be packaged in a tray with the entree of your choice and two different side dishes.  If you don’t have any particular requests or needs, these will usually be a vegetable and either a starch or fruit, as needed to create a well-rounded, complete meal.

If you have allergies, food restrictions or other preferences, we will make sure to choose items that meet your needs.  Also, if you are following a particular diet or eating plan and would like us to make sure all your sides are low-carb or low-fat, for example, just let us know in the comment section of your order and we’ll adjust your side dishes accordingly.  The more we know about your wants and needs, the better we can personalize your menu for you.

Common side dishes include (but are not limited to) green beans, carrots, peas, broccoli, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice, cauliflower, sugar snaps, vegetable mixes, spinach, fruit, beets, and lima beans.  If these or any other foods don’t appeal to you, make sure to let us know!

Magic Meals is a small family business, run out of a state-licensed kitchen in our home.  Due to county zoning restrictions, we are not allowed to have drive-up traffic or signage for our business, so we must deliver all of our meals.  We will make sure to schedule a time with you that is convenient for you and works for your schedule.

You can place your order online, by email or over the phone.  The online ordering system exists for your convenience, and if you would rather order by email or by phone, that is just fine with us!  All orders are sent to Angela and she enters them into a separate menu software.  If you order by email, just list the items that sound good to you, how many of each you’d like, indicate small or full-size portions and whether you’d like side dishes or not.  If Angela has any questions, she’ll reply to your email.  Once the details are worked out, she’ll send you an order total for your approval.

We are more than happy to take your order over the phone, as well.  We have many clients who don’t use computers, and Angela often goes over the menu options with clients over the phone.  In usually less than 10 minutes, she can take down your preferences and have your menu all set for you.  This is especially nice if you have any questions or want to discuss special dietary needs.  We’re here to simplify your life, so please order however is most convenient for you!

Absolutely!  We regularly cook for people who need low sodium meals.  Our standard preparation is already lower in sodium than most meals in the grocer’s freezer case, deli or restaurants, since we cook with whole foods and control the amount of salt that is added.  We can leave out any added salt and avoid higher sodium ingredients (like canned tomatoes, for example, by substituting no-salt added tomatoes) in order to provide you with very low sodium meals.  Of course, menu items with ingredients such as ham, which is itself very high in sodium, are not within our control.  Depending on the recipe, though, we can often leave out particular ingredients in order to meet your needs.  Make sure to mention your specific needs and we’ll make sure to prepare your meals as you want them.

Questions about heating Magic Meals. (1)

All Magic Meals are fully cooked when we deliver them to you, with the exception of fish fillets. Each meal has a label directly on the package that includes the heating instructions. In general, those instructions are for thawing in the refrigerator overnight and then microwave reheating of roughly three minutes at medium power.

Fish labels have directions for baking in the oven for roughly 13 minutes which will not only give you fresh baked fish but heated side-dishes. All fish meals are delivered in oven safe packaging.

Questions about the food. (9)

Angela and Stacey Davis, the founders of Magic Meals, believe that good food is the foundation of a good life.  We believe in using whole foods with the fewest possible additives.  We believe in eating limited preservatives and chemicals.  We believe in eating a balanced and varied diet of moderation while enjoying those foods that bring you bliss.

We believe in working and living as a family.  Our children work in the garden and help in the kitchen as they are able.

We believe that food made with professionalism and love is better than food made in bulk.  We know that we shouldn’t eat food that contains ingredients made in a laboratory.  We know that our service makes our clients’ lives better, and we take great pride in that.

The objective ofMagic Meals Home Delivery Whole Food Meals our business is to provide a high quality product and reliable service for our customers while building friendships that we hope will last a lifetime.  We hope you will enjoy visiting our web site and using our products as much as we enjoy providing them for you.

We deliver healthy, natural, whole food meals to the greater Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas area.

We take pride in personalizing our meals to each client’s needs.  If there is an ingredient in a particular menu item that you are considering that doesn’t appeal to you, we can sometimes leave ingredients out.  This depends a lot on each individual recipe, so please don’t hesitate to ask.  For example, foods like peas, mushrooms, bacon, corn and peppers can often be left out.  Let us know what you’d like and we’ll do our best to accommodate!

We currently do not have the ability to run nutrition label information for all our meals, as the cost for the testing is prohibitive for a small family business such as ours.  However, if you would like the nutrition info, we can figure the details for your order for $20 per menu.  You can let Angela know when you order and she will ask some questions regarding the information you are looking for and adjust your order total.

We have a strong sense of the average calories, protein, sodium, etc. for most of our meals, and we can help you make choices for your order that will be in line with your needs and goals, without having to figure the specifics for each item.  Just let us know what you need and we will help make it happen!

We recognize the nutritional superiority of organic meat and produce, and we love that more and more people are becoming interested!  Quite a few of the pantry ingredients that we use that can be bought in bulk (things like brown rice, black beans, quinoa, chicken broth, and beef broth, to name a few) are organic, and we purchase organic produce whenever it is practically priced in comparison to conventional and seasonally available.  We are always trying to move more in this direction, and we are proud to now offer the Local Pastured Beef, Cage-Free Chicken and Wild-Caught Salmon items on our menus.  We believe these upgraded proteins are healthier and better tasting, but for many of our clients the cost is prohibitive.  As a very small business, we are always trying to balance better quality while maintaining a price for our meals that people are willing and able to afford.

Below are some of the ingredients that we often purchase organic based upon availability.  Many of the images below are linked to stores where more information is available.

Here at Magic Meals, we believe that good food is the foundation of a good life.  We believe in using whole foods with the fewest possible additives, and nutritious, unprocessed, whole foods are the focus of our menus.  This means that we choose our ingredients carefully, purchasing items that are in their most natural state possible.  We use whole grains like brown rice, not enriched white rice.  We peel, cut, cook and mash all our potatoes by hand.  We buy produce that has not been cooked or altered other than cleaning or minor processing such as green beans that have been trimmed.  Generally, we shop the perimeter of the grocery store and fill our cart with fresh meats and fresh or frozen produce.  There are some exceptions, but they are carefully chosen in order to produce the highest quality product for all of our clients in a timely manner.  For example, we do use canned tomatoes, as the time to peel and chop the amount that we need each week would be prohibitive, and the quality of fresh tomatoes varies so much throughout the year.  We buy dried pasta, but we choose these carefully to avoid any unnecessary ingredients, and we purchase whole grain products.  We do also occasionally use prepared seasoning mixes, though this is rare and we more often mix our own!  If you have any questions about any of our ingredients, please don’t hesitate to ask.  We want you to know how your food is made, and we want you to know the care that we have taken to prepare it for you!

We do not add refined sugar in our recipes, and if we sweeten a recipe is it usually with fruit juice, honey or maple syrup.  We do have a very few recipes that use jelly or marmalade, which does contain refined sugar.  If you want or need to avoid sugar, the vast majority of our meals will be just fine for you.  If you want to avoid any added sugars, we can absolutely help you do that, either by avoiding menu items that contain honey, etc., or we can leave off a sauce or otherwise modify a recipe to meet your needs.  Make sure to let us know what you need in your meals and what you need to avoid, and we will let you know how we can make it happen.

As you know, our family has been eating Primal / Paleo for years.  For the most part, that means that we avoid grains and beans, eat lots of good quality fats and veggies, and focus on quality meats.  Such an eating strategy has not only helped us meet our wellness goals, but has been satisfying.   While many of the meals we eat are the same that we offer or clients, we are always looking for paleo condiments to round out our meals and snacks.  Below are some of our favorites, perhaps they will become yours as well.

Magic Meals has been providing prepared gluten free meals to the celiac and gluten intolerant community in Topeka and Lawrence Kansas for over a decade.  Our youngest daughter is gluten intolerant, thus not only is the Magic Meals kitchen gluten free, our entire home is primarily gluten free.   With years of experience, we’ve settled upon our go-to gluten free ingredients, which we believe are the best gluten free ingredients available and we hope these links help you too.

Most of these products are available locally at Hyvee or Whole Foods, but we’ve included links here for more information and your convenience.

There are many good gluten free flours available, but Krusteaz is Magic Meals’ stock Gluten Free flour.  From our experience this is the most versatile gluten free flour.  We use it to bread chicken breasts, thicken gravy, and occasionally for pizza crust.  This particular item is available for Amazon Prime (which Magic Meals uses), you can get a free trial here – Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial

This is the gluten free pasta that Magic Meals uses. It takes longer to cook that whole wheat pasta, but we like the firm texture of this pasta and the flavor is very nice.

Here at Magic Meals, we are uniquely positioned to review home kitchen equipment and tools.  In our home-sized state-licensed kitchen, we cook at least five full days a week.  With 40+ hours a week for over a decade, our 20,000+ hours of cooking time preparing 100,000+ meals has given us the opportunity to test home kitchen equipment to levels that most can not.  Below we are going to begin to collect our favorite kitchen equipment.  Some are available locally, but for your convenience we’ve included online links where you can find more information on the tools we’ve used and love.

While we cook much like a restaurant, in our hearts we are still home cooks. Below are the Magic Meals kitchens’ favorite tools, gadgets, and equipment. Until we find better, we believe these are the the best home kitchen equipment available. Keep checking back, because we’ll keep adding to this list.

The Instant Pot is the best advance in kitchen tech in years and we’re happy to review and recommend it.  It’s amazing.  We have the multiple old style pressure cookers that we use for cooking and canning, but this little wizard is the modern day version of that old pressure cooker.  The Instant Pot, or InstaPot, is a programmable digital pressure cooker.  With it we can put a roast in, program it to cook that roast, then keep it warm until we’re ready for it.  We can make real bone broth for our family in just a few hours!  It’s as fast as the old pressure cookers, but is way safer and doesn’t need to be babysit.  We love this thing and it lives on our kitchen counter.

This is such an inexpensive and simple tool, but it’s a game changer in the kitchen.  For years we used steel wool to get the hardest bits off of pots and pans…then we found these.  Well, really we found one of these and it’s lasted for years.  It won’t clean a pot, but it will scrub the hard stuff off so you regular scrubbing pad will make short work of the remains.  It sames time, elbow grease, is easy to clean, and last forever.   Every kitchen should have one of these above the sink.

Once again.  Simple.  Cheap.   Lasts forever!  This is one of the best kept secrets in kitchen upkeep.  This little garbage disposal plug fits into the disposal opening to keep big chunks of waste from falling in while doing the quick rinse before wash.  Then, you can remove the big chunks and pull the plug out and use the soft rubber bottom edge to squeegee the little bits into the disposal.  It doesn’t clog up like the silver ‘strainer’ that came with your sink, and it has other uses.  Every kitchen should have this tool.

We try to avoid specialized equipment, but this ‘specialized’ tool has lots of uses.  This little wire pan gives us crispy fries, onion rings, hot wings, and more.  The copper makes it an easy scrub to clean up.  This is one of the few specialty tools who’s upside offsets it’s storage and cleanup cost.  Love this kitchen tool!

This might be the most expensive kitchen tool on our list of must-have kitchen equipment.  We are frugal, but after years in the kitchen, we know that the right tools pay for themselves quickly.  A dull knife is a dangerous knife. A sharp knife is a time saver.  We sharpen our chef knives at least twice a day, and we complete that sharpening easily, quickly, and reliable using this tool.  In just seconds, we have a knife that will shave the hair off of your arm, and more importantly, slice effortlessly through onions, tomatoes, chicken breast, and everything else that passes through our kitchen.  If you ever cook, you deserve sharp knives.
