Questions about the food. (9)
Angela and Stacey Davis, the founders of Magic Meals, believe that good food is the foundation of a good life. We believe in using whole foods with the fewest possible additives. We believe in eating limited preservatives and chemicals. We believe in eating a balanced and varied diet of moderation while enjoying those foods that bring you bliss.
We believe in working and living as a family. Our children work in the garden and help in the kitchen as they are able.
We believe that food made with professionalism and love is better than food made in bulk. We know that we shouldn’t eat food that contains ingredients made in a laboratory. We know that our service makes our clients’ lives better, and we take great pride in that.
The objective of our business is to provide a high quality product and reliable service for our customers while building friendships that we hope will last a lifetime. We hope you will enjoy visiting our web site and using our products as much as we enjoy providing them for you.
We deliver healthy, natural, whole food meals to the greater Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas area.
When you order a meal with side dishes, it will be packaged in a tray with the entree of your choice and two different side dishes. Most of our meals are available to order with side dishes, but they are not listed on the menu on the website. The reason for this is because we personalize each client’s menu depending on your own needs and preferences. When you place your first order, we will ask if you have any food allergies or medical restrictions we need to know about when cooking for you. We will also ask if there are any vegetables or other foods you just don’t like, so we can make other choices for you that better fit your preferences.
When you order a meal with side dishes, it will be packaged in a tray with the entree of your choice and two different side dishes. If you don’t have any particular requests or needs, these will usually be a vegetable and either a starch or fruit, as needed to create a well-rounded, complete meal.
If you have allergies, food restrictions or other preferences, we will make sure to choose items that meet your needs. Also, if you are following a particular diet or eating plan and would like us to make sure all your sides are low-carb or low-fat, for example, just let us know in the comment section of your order and we’ll adjust your side dishes accordingly. The more we know about your wants and needs, the better we can personalize your menu for you.
Common side dishes include (but are not limited to) green beans, carrots, peas, broccoli, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice, cauliflower, sugar snaps, vegetable mixes, spinach, fruit, beets, and lima beans. If these or any other foods don’t appeal to you, make sure to let us know!
We take pride in personalizing our meals to each client’s needs. If there is an ingredient in a particular menu item that you are considering that doesn’t appeal to you, we can sometimes leave ingredients out. This depends a lot on each individual recipe, so please don’t hesitate to ask. For example, foods like peas, mushrooms, bacon, corn and peppers can often be left out. Let us know what you’d like and we’ll do our best to accommodate!
We currently do not have the ability to run nutrition label information for all our meals, as the cost for the testing is prohibitive for a small family business such as ours. However, if you would like the nutrition info, we can figure the details for your order for $20 per menu. You can let Angela know when you order and she will ask some questions regarding the information you are looking for and adjust your order total.
We have a strong sense of the average calories, protein, sodium, etc. for most of our meals, and we can help you make choices for your order that will be in line with your needs and goals, without having to figure the specifics for each item. Just let us know what you need and we will help make it happen!
We recognize the nutritional superiority of organic meat and produce, and we love that more and more people are becoming interested! Quite a few of the pantry ingredients that we use that can be bought in bulk (things like brown rice, black beans, quinoa, chicken broth, and beef broth, to name a few) are organic, and we purchase organic produce whenever it is practically priced in comparison to conventional and seasonally available. We are always trying to move more in this direction, and we are proud to now offer the Local Pastured Beef, Cage-Free Chicken and Wild-Caught Salmon items on our menus. We believe these upgraded proteins are healthier and better tasting, but for many of our clients the cost is prohibitive. As a very small business, we are always trying to balance better quality while maintaining a price for our meals that people are willing and able to afford.
Below are some of the ingredients that we often purchase organic based upon availability. Many of the images below are linked to stores where more information is available.
Here at Magic Meals, we believe that good food is the foundation of a good life. We believe in using whole foods with the fewest possible additives, and nutritious, unprocessed, whole foods are the focus of our menus. This means that we choose our ingredients carefully, purchasing items that are in their most natural state possible. We use whole grains like brown rice, not enriched white rice. We peel, cut, cook and mash all our potatoes by hand. We buy produce that has not been cooked or altered other than cleaning or minor processing such as green beans that have been trimmed. Generally, we shop the perimeter of the grocery store and fill our cart with fresh meats and fresh or frozen produce. There are some exceptions, but they are carefully chosen in order to produce the highest quality product for all of our clients in a timely manner. For example, we do use canned tomatoes, as the time to peel and chop the amount that we need each week would be prohibitive, and the quality of fresh tomatoes varies so much throughout the year. We buy dried pasta, but we choose these carefully to avoid any unnecessary ingredients, and we purchase whole grain products. We do also occasionally use prepared seasoning mixes, though this is rare and we more often mix our own! If you have any questions about any of our ingredients, please don’t hesitate to ask. We want you to know how your food is made, and we want you to know the care that we have taken to prepare it for you!
We do not add refined sugar in our recipes, and if we sweeten a recipe is it usually with fruit juice, honey or maple syrup. We do have a very few recipes that use jelly or marmalade, which does contain refined sugar. If you want or need to avoid sugar, the vast majority of our meals will be just fine for you. If you want to avoid any added sugars, we can absolutely help you do that, either by avoiding menu items that contain honey, etc., or we can leave off a sauce or otherwise modify a recipe to meet your needs. Make sure to let us know what you need in your meals and what you need to avoid, and we will let you know how we can make it happen.
Absolutely! We regularly cook for people who need low sodium meals. Our standard preparation is already lower in sodium than most meals in the grocer’s freezer case, deli or restaurants, since we cook with whole foods and control the amount of salt that is added. We can leave out any added salt and avoid higher sodium ingredients (like canned tomatoes, for example, by substituting no-salt added tomatoes) in order to provide you with very low sodium meals. Of course, menu items with ingredients such as ham, which is itself very high in sodium, are not within our control. Depending on the recipe, though, we can often leave out particular ingredients in order to meet your needs. Make sure to mention your specific needs and we’ll make sure to prepare your meals as you want them.
